Drive Yourself Sane

Woody Allen once said that he took a speed reading course and then read War and Peace. His conclusion was that it was all about Russia. A General Semanticist would have a field day with this line. To me, this book is incredibly well organized and there are exercises listed as Applications at the end of the chapters.

In order to do more than understand what GS 'is' I think it important to stress how important it is to practice what is being presented especially when it comes to your own day-to-day life experience. I have read several books on GS and have spent an untold number of hours putting into practice the tenets, as it were, of GS. Being able to verbally explain what the difference is between the 'map' and the 'territory' may be an interesting exercise, but the rubber meets the road when you realize that you have confused the two!!

I think the times are ripe a metaphor to be sure for more people to be grounded in the principles of GS and that they can operate with those principles when interacting with children. It doesn't take too much time to attend to the media and hear "whites are" or "blacks are" or "immigrants are" or "transgenders are", etc.

This book is well worth the read as long as it isn't skimmed! As a friend of mine often reminds me, if you want to be a violinist you had better have a violin under chin. The author doesn't go into much depth on non-verbal awareness compared with other books on the subject. But if you get bitten by the GS bug you will find yourself reading what he said about what she said about what he said and slowly, with practice of course, GS is not something out there but something that can transform areas of your life.

Or at the very least, that's the way I see it. The most comprehensive user friendly book on general semantics principles and practices. Very easy reading for profound but simple truths about how our words and actions are mixed together to help or hinder us from getting more of what we want and less of what we don't want now and the future.

Thanks for "powerful time binding" of these truths for future generations. Also very essential for the "insane" world we live in now with political correctness and pollution of our world with toxic language in word and in action where we don't mean what we say and say what we don't mean but believe every word of what we say.

In an era where it seems that everybody needs a gimick, that there needs to be some trick to do whatever Here is a book that just cuts to the chase. Get a clear idea of what you mean and how you think before you try to communicate to others or even yourself.

How you think about how you think has a direct effect on how you feel and what you can achieve. There are clear examples and exercises that will help you achieve clarity in thought and word and to get your actions into alignment with your thoughts. A period of time when the world went mad and critical thought was buried under a tsunami of propaganda from which we have yet to recover.

The practice of General Semantics is a way to clear your head and start thinking for yourself and to recognize when others are trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Sanity is hard work. Get ready to roll up your sleeves.

If you are interested in how to apply GS in your life I think you would do better to read some of Ellis' many books along with a primer on mindfulness.

Ellis speaks more clearly and directly, making it easier to both understand and implement ways to increase your sanity. Reading this book will help to move you away from making rash, snap judgments and using hasty, poorly-worded communication. It is written clearly and covers the topic of general semantics in logical steps. If you read the book with serious intent of improvement, it will sometimes make you stop and think about whether you understand what is being covered.

The book needs to be read at least twice to benefit from it. It should be of interest to anyone who needs to communicate clearly and to anyone who wants more peaceful relations with others. I haven't read a book in my entire life that was as solution-oriented rather than problem-oriented as this one. It's written in a very accessible language and even if I didn't understand certain parts of it in my first reading I understood much more when I read it second, third and fourth time.

This is a kind of a book that gives you more the more you read it and apply the techniques of General Semantics which a reader can benefit from so much. So far, it's the best book I've ever read. So far, it's the best book I've ever read. Drive Yourself Sane helped me understand and get along with people better, develop new skills of processing information and approach and solve everyday problems much more efficiently.

Bruce and Susan Kodish have done a tremendous job putting this book together and I'm very very gratetful to them for that. One person found this helpful.
