Released on October 18, , it is the fourth installment in the main Sonic the Hedgehog series and a direct sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
However, due to time constraints and the cost of a large-memory-capacity cartridge, Sega split the game in two. The game follows Sonic and Knuckles in their respective quests to save Angel Island. Sonic's side of the story picks up immediately after the events of Sonic 3, where Dr. Robotnik's orbital weapon, the Death Egg, is damaged in a battle with Sonic and crash-lands back onto Angel Island, landing in a volcanic crater. Sonic travels through each zone looking to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds to defeat Robotnik, and once again comes into conflict with Knuckles, who believes Sonic is trying to steal the Emeralds for himself.
The two hear a disturbance outside of the chamber, and go out to find Dr. Robotnik stealing the Master Emerald, the secret to the island's levitation powers. Knuckles attempts to attack Robotnik, but is electrically shocked in the process, and is trapped with Sonic in an underground passage.
Knuckles, realizing Sonic is on his side, shows him a portal that leads them to Sky Sanctuary, where the Death Egg is relaunching. Mecha Sonic is left behind in a damaged state as Sonic boards the relaunching Death Egg.
Robotnik uses the power of the Master Emerald to fuel a giant mech, but Sonic uses the power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic. If the player collects all the Chaos Emeralds, an ending is shown where a lone EggRobo rises from the wreckage of Robotnik's mech.
This leads into Knuckles' story. Knuckles' story begins in Mushroom Hill, where he is relaxing with his animal friends but is interrupted by a bomb dropped by EggRobo.
This prompts Knuckles to chase after him, leading him through most of the same zones Sonic went through. Knuckles manages to defeat Super Mecha Sonic, who blows up. If all the Chaos Emeralds are collected, Angel Island rises upwards, into the sky. However, if the player has not collected all the Chaos Emeralds, Knuckles cannot redeem the Master Emerald, and Angel Island plummets into the ocean.
There is also no multiplayer mode or save feature. The player character moves through eight levels, each divided into two acts. The first act of each level ends with a miniboss fight with one of Dr. Robotnik's robots, while the second ends with a regular boss fight with Robotnik; there is a final boss fight with Robotnik at the game's end. The two characters traverse levels differently: Sonic can jump slightly higher, is faster and can use the insta-shield ability which makes him invincible for a split-second, but Knuckles can glide, break obstacles and climb most walls.

The lock-on technology was actually a way of making up for the fact that the developers could not meet the deadline for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Time constraints forced them to split the project in two, releasing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with the completed levels and continuing work on the uncompleted ones, plus adding the Super Emeralds and the lock-on feature.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had once run into similar problems, resulting in the original Hidden Palace and several other levels being removed. Some NES games released by HES, as well as the Super Nintendo game Super 3D Noah's Ark , feature a cartridge port on the top to accept other games for the system, but this was purely to override the systems' respective lockout chips, as these games were not licensed by Nintendo.
Some video game peripherals require being joined with a cartridge in a similar manner i. Game Genie; GameShark , or transfer data between games the Transfer Pak but don't allow the "lock on"-style merging of data from 2 different video games.
The technology was considered ahead of its time. This would have been the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 that was originally meant to be released until time constraints caused the game to split into two. New features have being added as well, most notably the Super Emeralds.
Also known as Knuckles in Sonic 2 for short, Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is identical to Sonic 2 aside from a few changes to make it more playable with Knuckles but with Knuckles now playable instead of Sonic or Tails. The title screen features Knuckles and the only option is "Press Start" Options and the versus mode have been disabled but the level select is intact.
There are no new Zones. The only differences in gameplay are that Knuckles can explore once inaccessible areas where secrets such as 1-Ups have been added for Knuckles , some areas are harder because Knuckles cannot jump very high in particular, the final boss.
According to several programmers and hackers, the reason why Knuckles could not be placed into Sonic the Hedgehog like he was in Sonic 2 was that the palette colors of Knuckles' sprite would have, in fact, completely altered the palette scheme of the entire game.
Hackers, however, succeeded several years later in making a game hack called Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog. The color palette problems are overcome by only using two shades of red for Knuckles' body, rather than four or five. There was also the Spin Dash technique that could abuse the entire game by running at greater speeds than Sonic could. In , Knuckles was officially made available in Sonic the Hedgehog via its re-release on mobile devies.
Again the only way to play all Blue Sphere levels off one cartridge is locking on to Sonic 1.
